The Historical Waiuta

The Historical Waiuta
By Kahikatea

Gold was discovered at Waiuta aka the Birthday Quartz Reef (Its called that because it was found on King Edward VII’s birthday)in the South island in 1905. Within a few years a new town was formed home to just over 600 people.

How much Gold?

Unlike many other West Coast gold towns, people came from Yugoslavia, Italy and Australia just to get the gold from Waiuta. Waiuta did not appear and disappear over night but continued to function until 1951. Before one of the two mine shafts collapsed they had gathered just under 750,000 ounces which is 21,262,142 grams, today that is worth $418,687,500. Repair was considered uneconomic and so this was the end of the mine and town.

Todays Waiuta

Today the town site is almost empty of buildings but still full of memories and history. Many mining relics remain from the days when humans worked there. Only a few of the town's original buildings still stand, including the former post office foundations, three cottages, an old barber shop and lots of chimneys. After that “Gold rush” some people still come back and occasionally gold pan there.

This week has flown by me and Jakob has got a lot of the personal inquiry screenplay writing done. Each day we do at least 20 minutes of khan but one day I did 62 minutes once.

Weekly Reflection week 8

I like how we have less structure, that means we have more time for SDL. SDL stands for (Self Directed Learning) so we can choose when we do maths like I want to do it later after writing. I work fine when I get told what to do in this time and that its just when I don't have enough time for a subject. I work super well when I choose what time I want to do things and how much time I spend on that thing.

Rapunzel expanding on a sentence

My Sentence
No one dared enter this garden.

Me Expanding
No sane human dared to ever travel from their dangerless house through the mistful nursery gates. He had never seen illuminating majestic rapunzel plants before.

Why I chose this sentence: I chose it because it looked short and it would be easy to expand on it because it was using easy words.

Why I expanded on a sentence: We have been reading fairy tales this term and then we wrote our versions of the stories. But for this story we just expanded on a sentence so that it wouldn’t take up much time so that everyone could get there work finished.

Weekly reflection week 6

SDL in my opinion means I have time that I can work on stuff I still have to do and not do writing at this time and maths at one I can do it when ever I want in the day. I have completed most of my tasks set I've just been behind on my writing because I'm still getting use to managing my time. If I have spare time, Like if I have finished all my set tasks for the week I will write my script for my movie that I am making with Jakob. in my opinion if you can't keep focused on your personal inquiry why pick that subject. you tend to keep focused on something that you like.
